Hi, I'm Julia!
I was passionate about art from an early age, especially painting portraits and animals. After school, I studied book studies, German studies and art history at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (Magister 2012, PhD 2017).
During my studies, I focused on Johannes Gutenberg and the invention of book printing, in particular the fascinating transition from manuscripts to mass-produced books, in which each copy became unique thanks to hand-painted details.
In 2013, I began illuminating reproductions of individual pages from the Gutenberg Bible, combining my love of art with my academic background. Since then, I have been working as a freelance artist and have specialized in illumination.

Exhibition and Workshop
On April 25, 2026, an exhibition of my works will open at the Bartlhaus Museum of Writing and Local History in Pettenbach, Austria. To mark the occasion, I will be offering a workshop on site the following day for anyone who would like to delve deeper into the world of historical book illumination.
